Mind Reader

Directed by Jabu Nadia Newman

Jabu Newman directs Alice Phoebe Lou’s intimate short ‘Mind Reader’

Shot on 16mm in New York, Mind Reader traces the shape of a young relationship: the joy of new love, the ache of disconnection, and the lasting imprint of creating shared memories. With Jabu’s instinctive eye for intimacy and atmosphere; the film moves through fluid timescapes and grainy, dreamlike moments that echo the emotional pull of Alice’s songwriting.

Alice and I have known each other since high school, and we’d always dreamed of collaborating. Meeting again as young adults in a Williamsburg coffee shop felt like the perfect moment to finally create something together. She shared ‘Mind Reader’ with me, and I immediately wanted to capture the sentiments, melodies, and mood of the song through a young New York couple. I loved that people unashamedly lived their lives on the streets. Couples fought in the subways, kissed on park benches, and made the city alive with love and conflict.

Mind Reader marks the instalment of a three-part visual series from Alice Phoebe Lou’s new album Oblivion.
